About Our Transcription Projects

Audio transcription may be needed for audio material such as dictations or group interviews. The original material can also be in video form. Transcription is utilised both in public research and business. Besides regular transcription, Kääntövoima also offers audio transcription translations, which means translating the transcribed material. We will create a tailor made package for your transcription project. We will evaluate the duration and cost of the project based on the original material and the type of transcription you want.

Before we begin the transcription project, we will agree on the purpose of the audio transcription: sometimes a client wants information on expletives, while another client may want to focus on the speakers’ non-verbal communication. Knowing the focus of the analysis will allow us to provide you with the best results. The original material can be in audio or video form.

Basic Transcription

In basic transcription, the transcriber leaves out the content that is not important or needed in the project. Besides speech, the text may include information on the speakers’ facial expressions or body language or emotional expression. The speech is transcribed as it is spoken, and the text may include repetition, expletives, or extralinguistic elements, if they are what you need in your project.

Standard Language Transcription

The audio material is transcribed word-for-word, but the result is tidied up, which means omitting redundant content. This includes pauses, repetition, and expletives.

Standard language transcription is used when the topic of the conversation is more important than the speaker’s enunciation. Interviews are often transcribed this way, because the focus is on the speaker’s opinions and not on their way of speaking.

Discourse Analytical Transcription

The material is transcribed as meticulously as possible, following the speakers’ way of speaking and their behaviour. This type of transcription means that the transcription includes

  • every word that the speakers say, including repetition and expletives
  • pauses and their duration<
  • emphases and tones of voice
  • expressions of emotion (verbal and non-verbal)
  • extralinguistic content, such as gestures and facial expressions.

Discourse analytical transcription is utilised to analyse the speech situation and the interaction between the speakers, rather than only focusing on the topic of the conversation. Research interviews can be transcribed this way if the research focuses on the speech situation. Because this type of transcription pays attention to extralinguistic matters, the source material is often in video form.

Discourse analytical transcription is the most precise level of transcription. Because of this, the cost of discourse analytical transcription is higher than that of other types of transcription.

Translation of Transcriptions

We can also translate your audio material after we have transcribed it. This service is available from Finnish into English and English into Finnish.

Translation of audio transcription is often utilised when your transcripted material is in a different language from your other research material. It is useful to conduct an interview in the native language of the people interviewed and have the material translated into the language of the study report afterwards.

The cost of translation of audio transcription is higher than other audio transcription services because of the translation costs. The other factors contributing to the cost still apply.

Translation of audio transcription can be combined with other audio transcription services. We can make a discourse analytical transcription of foreign language material that includes extralinguistic content. Alternatively, we can translate a discourse analytical transcription into standard everyday language. We will agree on the details of each project separately, so don’t hesitate to contact us and ask us about our services.
